Transit Woes

Posted: September 12, 2010 in Complete Streets, New Urbanism, Urban Design, Urban Lifestyle

According the Birmingham News today,  the local bus system is saying they will have to shut down half their routes if city hall does not pay them what they promised. Now we all know the city has had budget problems, but shouldn’t they complete their pledge? It seems the local transit authority lives from hand to mouth and month to month.

In future posts, I would like to elaborate on the following:

  • Birmingham used to have a more viable bus system. Why has it declined?
  • Is a transit system vital to the economic success of any large and diverse metro area?
  • Can access to transportation  be considered a human and civil rights issue?
  • What does it take to have a viable self supporting transit system?
  • How does transit contribute to a strong regional development and transportation plan that promotes an increase in density, discourages urban sprawl, and supports a more active lifestyle?
